Harvesting Rainwater for Your Plants and Trees in South Florida

Since it is rainy season here in South Florida, water conservation can be simply done by harvesting rain water to plants and trees in your backyard. Harvesting rainwater is not only a natural way to water plants, but also a cost saver!

Designing a rainwater harvesting system is simple. Either you can dig trenches around the plant beds so that rainwater digs deep into the soil or rain water gutters can be extended to where plants are. Sometimes South Florida droughts can lend itself to extreme dryness and plants may die. Irrigation systems can be costly, and therefore when there is rainfall, it is advantageous to design ditches or trenches to retain some of the rainwater.

Here in South Florida, most homes have sloping roofs in which rain water can drip down from the roof to the floor. Sod that contain copious amounts of sodium can dehydrate plants, and retention of rainwater in the plants prevent plants from shriveling up in the mid summer heat. When a ingenuous water system is in place, it could prevent your water bill from increasing during summer months!
